Powema tori: Surinamese poetry in sound and image

17 September 2022

15:00 - 17:00

An afternoon on a beautiful location in Rotterdam to celebrate the beauty of Surinamese poetry. This event is co-organized with the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet.

The Taalmuseum (Language Museum) is organizing an afternoon event together with the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet (Rotterdam Reading Cabinet) to celebrate the acquisition of a special collection of Surinamese poetry. The collection consists of beautifully published poetry collections from roughly the 1960s to the present day, with a variety of poetic themes and an impressive amount of images.

The poetry collections have been curated with care by our director Fresco Sam-Sin. The language used is Sranantongo, one of the many languages spoken in Suriname and the Netherlands.

This afternoon celebrates the language and translation of Surinamese poetry. In this context, we have put together our first event: we welcome researcher and Sranantongo specialist Hermine Haman and her percussionist, the famous Carlo Hoop. And, the prize winning storyteller and poet Guillaume Pool, and renowned artist and writer Arnold Schalks. There will be artwork om display by artists Hedy Tjin and Che Qianzi. Jeroen van Ravenhorst of Leiden University will introduce you to a new dictionary app for Sranantongo, which the Taalmuseum is also actively involved in.
